elite Expression

Once again, The Elite Club had the privilege to pay a visit to the 8th grade class we previously worked with at Hedgepeth Williams Middle School in Trenton. In a series of visits, we introduced to them spoken word as a form of creative expression. One of our members, Rana performed one of her remarkable pieces for the kids and they loved it. We then all worked on our own poems and, at the end of our second session, some of the students even performed their poems.

One of the major goals of the ELITE club is to succeed in inspiring the students we work with. We have noticed that schools are progressively putting less and less emphasis on the arts and more focus on basic math and reading skills. Although we strongly support that these skills are vital to their future success, we believe that promoting creativity is crucial, as well. Creativity allows minds to think in novel and unusual ways, making it possible to produce multiple solutions to problems rather than the single solution that may result from a rigid thought process. The ELITE club believes creative thinking in conjunction with the traditional critical thinking that educational systems more often promote is the ideal combination. For these reasons, we promote creative expression through art. Art is an outlet for children to release their stress, a vehicle for explaining their emotions and even a way to boost their self-esteem. When we work with our students, we want the classroom environment to be a fun center of learning where children can be creative and express themselves. In concurrence with these classroom activities we plan for the kids, we also want to provide each of them with an orange ELITE journal where they can feel free to express themselves freely. Please work with us in opening minds one step at a time. Support the movement. Be the Change. Live to Evolve.
