Our Policies & Procedures
Selection of mentees: Referrals for youth participation will be solicited from teachers,
guidance counselors, and parents/guardians, etc. Usually one eighth grade class from Hedgepeth Williams School will participate.
Recruitment of mentors: The program will be promoted the via a marketing campaign,
posters, community presentations, and the intrenet. A recruitment session will held every year to
provide more information. Application forms and a training schedule will be available at this session.
How mentors are screened and trained: All mentors must undergo a comprehensive screening process. The screening should include completion of an application, personal interview, personal and professional reference checks and criminal background checks. Other checks, such as child abuse and sexual offender registries and motor vehicle records, may also be used.
How mentors and mentees are matched: A 1:4 ratio will be kept between mentors and
mentees. Mentees will be assigned to mentors on a basis of similar interests.
Mentor commitment: The relationship is a long-term one that involves bi-weekly mentoring
sessions of 2-3 hours. They must also abide by program rules at all times or face termination.
How to evaluate success: Mentees will take the Youth–Mentor Relationship Questionnaire
(YMRQ; Roffman et al.) after 5 months in the program, as well as at the end of the program to assess youth mentoring program.
